Cost-effective solution

BigSis technology cuts the cost per hectare of the sterile insect technique (SIT) by up to 90%, creating a farm-scale solution that is more effective than chemical insecticides as well as benign to the environment.

Launching our first solution

Our first solution, which is approved for sale in England and four USA states, is for the control of spotted wing drosophila (SWD). Our world-first field trial, using SIT against SWD in open polytunnels, was a resounding success, achieving season-long control and up to 91% suppression. We are currently increasing the scale of our automated production of sterile male insects with a view to expanding commercial availability in 2024.

Non-genetically modified

Our non-GM solutions have a unique mode of action and dovetail with established commercial practices such as integrated pest management (IPM). They aim to prevent pests ever reaching the infestation level associated with spraying chemical insecticides.

How BigSis do it

This involves regular releases of sterile male insects starting before the pest emerges and continuing throughout the season. The result is better yield and quality of your crop and a significant reduction in the use of chemical insecticides. The BigSis control solution, including monitoring and release, is offered on a cost-per-hectare per-year basis.
